NSW industry put on notice
New reforms have come into the building industry to improve performance and professionalism. Licence holders can only renew their licences once they have earned enough professional development (CPD) points. A minimum 100 points had to be earned over a three-year period or the licence renewal could be declined. There are seven categories of CPD activities such as upgrading licences; formal education courses; industry training, seminars and workshops; private study and research; industry committee participation; formal industry promotion and training; industry experience and apprenticeships. The changes, brought in March this year, by the NSW Office of Fair Trading, Home Building Service to ensure builders and trade contractors keep pace with changes in the home building industry. Because a number of proposed projects are not proceeding developers are already seeing building quotes from sub-contractors drop by up to 10 per cent. (Financial Review 29/04/2004)
