Schindler escalators to improve mobility in QVB
Since 1810 the site of the present day Queen Victoria Building (QVB)
in Sydney has been a market place where Sydney-siders have gathered to meet and shop.
In the next stage of the historic building's evolution, QVB will undergo a significant
refurbishment that will include six Schindler 9300AE escalators.
QVB is not only a Sydney landmark but an Australian icon featured on many postcards,
brochures, web sites and is a must see for tourists. The current owners of the building,
IPOH, are committed to preserving the heritage of the building while at the same time
investing to ensure the building meets Sydney's ever-changing population and landscape.
"Hundreds of thousands of people from all around the world visit the QVB every year.
We want to ensure that the views of the beautiful atrium are open for all to see while
at the same time improving mobility for shoppers and enhancing the space for retailers,"
said Victor Gaspar, Group General Manager IPOH.
Schindler's works will include the removal of the four existing escalators, connecting
level one and two at each end of the building, and supply and installation of six new
9300AE escalators. The escalators will have customised reflective glass protecting the
truss to maximise the light in the atrium and enhance ambiance.
"The client's requirements were very specific and there were many variables to consider
including safety, access, mobility and of course heritage. We were able to work closely
with the project managers, Clifton Coney (now Coffey Projects), led by Diane Crittenden,
to offer a solution that would be perfect for the site," said Hubert Wulz, Key Account
Manager Schindler Australia.
The refurbishment works in the QVB commenced in August 2007 and will conclude in 2009.
