Boral Bricks at Bellagio

In its mixed use development, 'Bellagio', at Homebush Bay in Sydney,
project architects Allen Jack+Cottier chose Boral's clay bricks as one of the building's
major building materials for their durable and low maintenance qualities in a marine
environment.
A high water table on the reclaimed site posed some challenges to construction of the
project, which consists of 123 one, two and three bedroom apartments and 18
commercial/retail outlets. Underground parking facilities were foregone and the
acidic soil restricted the use of some materials at ground level.
Bricks from Boral's Escura® Smooth Face and Velour ranges were specified in Pearl
Grey. Then on the waterfront side, three five story projecting elements in
contrasting Terracotta (also Escura® Smooth Face) provide a scaled transition to
street level from the seven story building behind. The brick colour injects warmth
while accentuating the deep, semi-enclosed balconies on these projecting forms,
and positively glows when the late afternoon sun strikes the building.
