Electronic Blueprints' Masonry at the Crossroads - international conference

Rod Johnston (Electronic Blueprint and ENVIROSPEC) will be presenting two of
the 140 papers at the "Masonry at the Crossroads" International Conference at Swiss-Grand Hotel,
Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia, 17 - 20 February 2008. He will speak on earthquake loading and
free-standing masonry boundary walls. Masonry is a traditional, widely used material. However,
with the advent of new materials and building systems, together with the increasing emphasis
on sustainability considerations, the use of masonry will decline unless it can be shown that
it is also a material for the future. This conference will explore these issues in the context
of research and building practice and will be of interest to architects, engineers, building
designers, product manufacturers and researchers. Over 140 papers will be presented by participants
from over 20 countries, with strands dealing with sustainability issues, architectural and structural
design, masonry materials, historical masonry, masonry strengthening and repair, numerical modeling
and masonry durability. The conference is hosted by the University of Newcastle, Concrete Masonry
Association of Australia and Think Brick Australia.
