Gas Filled Insulating Glass from Sovereign Windows & Doors

ARGON GAS FILL SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY SOVEREIGN WINDOWS
Why gas filled insulating glass? Why Argon?
The answer is simple. Gas filling is a low-cost procedure which provides major improvement in the product's thermal performance. Argon is the gas most frequently used for gas filling because it is inexpensive and readily available. Krypton is a good candidate though more expensive. Krypton gas allows a very narrow unit to be manufactured that has very high performance. Krypton is used most often with three layers, the centre layer being a plastic film.
Argon and Krypton are both refined from air, stable and inert and less thermally conductive than air.
Of the three argon is the most plentiful, almost 1 percent of the air we breathe and consequently the most economical to use. You are breathing about one percent Argon right now.
Sovereign Windows double and triple glazed windows have 98% argon gas fill and only offer double hermetically sealed units with a 10 year guarantee on the units. Argon is eventually replaced by air over a very long time ( approximately 1% per year) so even after 20 years 80% of the argon remains.
Details for the curious.
Since the "insulation" in multiple-glazed windows is the entrapped gas, increasing the gas space thickness increases overall U-value. For example, multiple-glazed units with 12mm "air" space have lower U-values than those with 6mm "air" spaces. However, the effect of increasing the thickness of the gas space is limited.
Beyond a certain thickness interpane convection increases, carrying heat from the inner to the outer pane through air circulation. Further increases in gas space thickness do not result in reduced U-value.
The exact thickness at which convection becomes a dominant heat transfer mechanism depends on the height of the glass unit, the gas used, and the temperature differential between indoors and outdoors.
Clear glass lets long wave radiation pass readily. 50 percent of the energy transferred out of a clear glass window is due to radiation. 25 percent of the energy is due to conduction. Until the door could be shut on the large radiant transfer gas filling would not really be viable.
