Self Levelling Polyurethane Mortar from Poly-Tech

durable commercial kitchen floor

Poly-Tech Industrial Services was contracted to provide a specification for a durable floor finish within a large commercial kitchen of a correctional facility operator. The existing tiles were in need of replacement as over time many had cracked and broken away. This condition allowed water seepage into the concrete substrate and as a result the tiles became drummy and lifted, creating an unsafe environment for food preparation. The specification called for a product that could handle extreme cold (ie fridges, freezers), extreme heat (ovens & dishwashers), and wet areas. The product needed to be slip resistant, and the most critical factor was the long term durability and resistance to excessive traffic. There was also the need to ensure minimal disruptions to the facility.

The solution was to remove the tiles and to prepare the substrate by grinding and scabbling. The floor was inspected for any structural defects and minor crack repairs. The hand formed coves were installed at the floor and wall junctions to provide ease of cleaning and ensure that water did not pond under the benches.

With exposure to heavy traffic, fats and oils it was decided that a self levelling polyurethane mortar was the best option for this project. It met all of the requirements for the facility with the added advantages of low odour and fast cure whilst also meeting the stringent HACCP criteria.

The specified system provided an aesthetically pleasing, hygienic surface with a non slip finish compliant with Australian Standards. The requirements took into account such issues as additional temperatures around ovens where a thicker application was installed.
