CASE STUDY: SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOF TOP - RITEK ROOF PANELS

Malua Bay is Batemans Bay's finest surf beach, and transforms from a sleepy beachside town during the week, into a lively holiday village on weekends and during the holidays.

TT Architecture's Tony Trobe has created an impressive dual occupancy 'villa' style design, perched lightly on a cliff top in Malua on the NSW coast. Tony's design has just won the Master Builders (ACT) Excellence in Building Awards 'Medium Density/Dual Occupancy' housing category. The project is a highly successful collaboration between innovative design and "attention to detail" construction.

There is some distinct innovation in the architectural form expressed by the simple wavelike roof that appears to slide and float over the lower element. Tony Trobe said 'I chose Ritek's Custom Roof Panel for its superior spanning capacity of up to 11 metres, the unrivalled cantilever capability of up to 4.2mtrs and the thin profile'.

The roof constitutes a very strong architectural feature with the substantial cantilevers coming to an innovatively detailed and elegant thin edge. The Ritek roof plane thickness of 150mm provides a delicate "floating" form. Tony framed the Ritek roof with an aluminium edge, which further accents the roof's slender curve. The subtle treatment serves to emphasize the tension of the cantilever producing a building of singular, individual and original architectural style.

The duplex is the brainchild of a group of 4 families and combines a successful synthesis of crisp nonstandard domestic aesthetics, semi commercial materials with a very informal yet spectacular relationship of inside to out.

The spare minimalism of the architectural detailing and joinery counterpoint the inclusion of rich, warm natural materials. The living areas appear generous and expansive through the positioning of windows that soar to the ceiling. This effect can only be achieved by the removing the 'bulky' structure associated with conventional roof systems.

Tony's dual occupancy residence design replaced the original 'beach shack' on this beach front block. The orientation of the block dominated the residence's design considerations, as with most beach houses located on the East Coast of Australia.

The clients wanted both villas to take advantage of the spectacular sea views, cool sea breezes, achieve good solar orientation. Each dwelling could then take advantage of energy efficiency achieved through good orientation. Ritek's insulated roof panel provided thermal comfort for the buildings occupants and the brilliant cantilevered upper levels provided shelter in the main living areas, shielding out the glare from the sun.

The award winning design is an outstanding solution for this beach side site. It achieves a private living space for both of the building's unit occupants, each screened for privacy from the neighbours yet open and expansive towards the beach and the sea.
