C & A the first carpet manufacturer to use biodiesel renewable energy source - Geo Flooring
C&A is the first carpet manufacturer to use biodiesel as an energy source. Vegetable
oils and grease wastes from restaurants are diverted from their usual landfill waste
stream and are recycled by C&A in their Dalton, Georgia, US plant, to use as a fuel for
manufacturing.
C&A commenced using 100% biodiesel in its commercial boilers in February 2006 and
now 11% of its total energy is from renewable sources. Biodiesel is a form of "biomass"
energy and can be made from soybean or canola oils, animal fats, waste vegetable oils,
or microalgae oils. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, and safe to handle, transport and
store. It reduces visible smoke, odours, and toxic emissions associated with petrodiesel.
Not only does the use of biodiesel divert this waste stream from landfill, but it also has a
significant positive impact on the environment by reducing C&A's:
- Carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) by 78%.
- Particulate emissions by 48%.
- Air toxics by 60-90%.
- Hydrocarbon emissions by 67%.
- Sulfate emissions by 100%.
- Polycyclic aromatics (PACs), resulting in significant reduction in carcinogens.
C&A are truly leaders in environmental stewardship, being the first company to have a
fully operational closed-loop recycling process. Not only do they offer a range of
