Disappearing Truss for Band of Magicians

Take four talented artists, blend them into an act and onto a stage set framed by five illuminated diminishing truss arches... what do you get? The Band of Magicians on stage at one of Sydney's biggest events of the year, the Sydney Festival 2014.

Producer, Jo Dyer, of Soft Tread Enterprises came to DQ with a concept structure for truss arches to be an integral part of the set for the stage show at Parramatta's Riverside Theatres. The frames consisted various lengths and horizontal corners using F42P. The truss set up was designed to be the key element of the stage set, designed and created by set designer, Peter England.

"It was a wonderful solution to the challenge posed by the production," Jo said. "How to create a visually appealing look for the show whilst not impeding to open stage required for both the range of performance from the four band members and the movement of the key, and large, props. The structure provided a simple, yet striking, aesthetic, lifting the show out of a black-box feel without encroaching on the stage's flexibility."

Peter's design is now a signature semi-industrial aesthetic and an interested distorted perspective with the "disappearing" truss structures. These can be easily modified should their shows tour to larger venues. Of course, they are also able to use the truss for the practical application of hanging lights with the show lit by lighting designer, Matthew Marshall.

Jo Dyer hopes that the tour will expand and are currently looking at venues within Australia, New Zealand and hopefully in the US in the near future.
