Hychord now also treated to the core. Carter Holt Harvey has just launched their popular Hychord® LVL Truss Chords with termite treatment. Why? Gordon Marshall, Manager Product Development explains. "Our existing Hychord product is popular with a lot of frame and truss fabricators and they were demanding the termite treatment. Up until now, getting it treated meant transporting it to a treatment facility which is expensive and time consuming." | How does the treatment work? "Hychord, like our Hyspan® and Hybeam®, is termite treated during manufacture. The insecticide is applied to the glueline so it really gets to the core of the engineered timber." Apart from preventing termite damage how does this help the fabricator? "When truss fabricators dock the ends there's no need to reseal." Apart from being incredibly effective against termites south of the Tropic of Capricorn, the insecticide is also very safe. | | Gordon elaborates, "The insecticide, DeterMiteT, uses bifenthrin. Bifenthrin is approved for other applications such as (a pesticide) for food crops and as an on ground termite barrier." Adding it to the glue during manufacture has a number of advantages. "For one, the active ingredients are locked-up inside the glue and timber and a low dosage is required - the termites are quite sensitive to and are repelled by bifenthrin." DeterMite was the first treatment product for timber to be developed with the active ingredient bifenthrin. In essence, Hychord termite treated to H2-S is the same as Hychord, only with termite resistance. It is available off the shelf, colour-coded purple and clearly marked H2-S. Available in a ready to use form it requires no remedial treatments and has all the properties you've come to expect.
