Murals by Peter Day Kirk Gallery - environmental art and design

Peter Day Kirk Gallery presents the Whale Story of the Gweagle
People. Over five panels, 2m x 4m, each hand made, glass and ceramic tile
mosaic as commisioned by the Sutherland Council.
The mural depicts the true story of the time, up to a hundred plus years ago,
when the Gweagle People waited for the Killer Whales (Orcas) to migrate past
the Port Hacking area. There they drove schools of fish into the bay and
hearded the fish into the nets of the 'people'. The Orcas then presented
themselves on to the beach and the Gweagle people would feed them some fish as
a thank you.
This was told to Peter Day by the Local Elders, who was also given permission
to tell the story in pictures so the story would not be lost. The work is next
to the Sutherland Entertainment Centre so it gets seen by lots of people.
