The Natural Weathering of Western Red Cedar

For as long as Western Red Cedar has been used in Australia, some specifiers have chosen to follow overseas trends and leave external applications un-coated to weather naturally. The best overseas examples are from very dry and consistently dry climatic regions.

Industry recommendations have generally been against leaving the timber un-coated but the architectural appeal of natural soft silver grey timber tones has won over many a lengthy deliberation.

The most recent publication on Finishing Western Red Cedar externally from the WRCLA presents the hard facts on this subject in a very focused manner. It concedes that un-coated Cedar is viable in limited circumstances, but also highlights where this concept is likely to fail and the implications of those failures.

The relevant data is included in the Finishing & Coating section of the TIMBECK web site - www.timbeck.com.au - or it can be downloaded as a PDF of the entire WRCLA publication - compulsory reading for all specifiers and users of Western Red Cedar.
