Designbuild Awards
THE 'LATEST AND GREATEST' BUILDING AND DESIGN PRODUCTS SHOWCASED AT THE
DESIGNBUILD 2005 AWARDS
The Best New Product Award was judged by Ken
McBryde and Stephanie Smith of innovarchi Architects and Dean Perry. Neil
Williams, Sales Director of Architectural Product News and Ken McBryde presented
the award to Reckli Australia for the 'Reckli Vectogramm'.
The
RECKLI-Vectogramm is a computer-based process used to transfer image data onto
sheet materials by means of milling technology. By employing the Vectogramm
system, a surface pattern can be created on any finished concrete surface, with
the finished detail varying from fine to course, depending on the resolution of
the image used. Using the Vectogramm system, designers and architects can form
almost any image on the face of concrete and plaster - and the finished effect
is always impressive.
The finalists for the Best Product Award were
Architectural Distribution for the 'Valchromat', Interspace Manufacturing for
the 'EcoSmart Fire', Nanotec P/L for the 'Nanoprotect CS' and Trend Tile for the
'Kerlite'. Both Nanotec and Trend Tile received a Special Commendation for their
products.
The Valchromat is a resin bonded fibre board, which is
available in six 'design friendly' colours, each of which go all the way through
the board. Similar, yet superior to MDF, Valchromat is UV and moisture
resistant, meets Australian safety and environmental standards and has almost
unlimited applications for both residential and industrial fit-outs.
An
Australian innovation, the EcoSmart Fire, is an environmentally friendly, open
fireplace. Flueless and not requiring any installation or utility connection to
a fuel supply, the EcoSmart Fire is ideal for apartment and inner city living.
Nanoprotect CS is a tiny, nanoscopic, mono layer mesh, designed
specifically for application to either concrete or stone, to make the surface
hydrophobic, and hence easy to clean. Each of the products in the Nanotec range
use 'nanotechnology', which employs near atomic sized particles that when
combined with the dynamic properties of surface atoms, effectively transform the
behaviour and characteristics of a wide variety of surfaces.
Italian-made Kerlite, the 'next generation' of porcelain, is made from
large proportions of both pure phosphate and clay and smaller proportions of
zirconium and colouring. Kerlite is a mere 3mm in thickness, and while currently
used for wall applications, can also be used on the front and back of any type
of door, or for splashbacks, external walls and flat surfaces, such as tabletops
and benchtops
Dael Climo, Editor of Environ / BPN, presented the Environ
/ Designbuild Environmental Product Award (ESD) to Streamline Drains &
Pipelines for their 'Streamline Lining System'.
The Streamline Lining
System has the potential to reduce the mains water leakage problems of water
authorities around Australia. Currently used in the Sydney area, Dael Climo
commented that, "the Steamline Lining System has the capacity to remove the need
for a desalination plant to be built in Sydney, in order to cope with water
shortages". Indeed, a very worthy winner of the ESD Award.
The finalists
for the Environ / Designbuild Environmental Product Award were KISSS for their
'Kapillary Irrigation Sub Surface Systems' and Ortech Industries P/L for their
'Durra Multipurpose Construction Panels'.
The Kapillary Irrigation Sub
System uses 60% less water drip irrigation than traditional systems, with
applications as diverse as household gardens and wineries.
Ortech
Industries' Durra Multipurpose Construction Panels are sophisticated,
multipurpose panels, made from agricultural waste, that have an enormous variety
of commercial building applications. Both Ortech Industries P/L and KISSS
received a Special Commendation.
Bill Hare, Exhibition Director then
presented the Best Stand Awards. The winner of the Best Shell Scheme Award was
De Poortere Pty Ltd. The finalists were Fix-A-Tap Australia, Kan Lee
International Trading and OMC.
The winner of the Best Stand 36m2 and
Under was JD Macdonald. The finalists were Alucobond Architectural, CHH
futurebuild and Portobello SA.
Moen Glass was presented with the Best
Stand Over 36m2 Award. The finalists were Architectural Window Systems (Vantage)
P/L, BlueScope Steel, Everstone P/L and Pyramis SA.
