Handy hints - the best cleaning products to use with a BioSeptic system

Caring for your septic tank system takes minimal effort, however the little effort you put in can produce great results. To ensure you get the best results from your BioSeptic system, use only biodegradable and septic-safe products.

When shopping for various cleaners, detergents, toilet paper etc, check the labels to determine their safety to BioSeptic systems-using septic-safe products will make your BioSeptic operate more efficiently.

BioSeptic does not endorse any particular product or product manufacturer mentioned in this article, however, they are found to be suitable for use in a BioSeptic system. The benefit of using these products is that they are available in most retail stores and supermarkets.

For the kitchen, you may want to consider using the following products:

  • Sunlight
  • Palmolive
  • Kwitcare
  • Kit
  • Trix
  • Topwash

Most dishwashing detergents are strong in alkaline and should be used in moderation, especially Finish.

  • Toilet Duck
  • Similar products

Most Amway products are safe to use, with the exception of:

  • Dry chlorine bleach
  • Persue Disinfectant
  • Liquid Fabric Softener
  • SA8 Liquid with Fabric Softener

Many other products are labelled "Safe for Septics". Most of these should not adversely affect the system.

Try to avoid using NapiSan or similar products, as antibacterial solutions will kill the bacteria required to make the septic system work. If nappies must be soaked, make sure the wash water does not enter the system.

Do not use bleach unless the water can be disposed of without entering the system, as this too will kill the bacteria required to make the waste water system function. When you are ready to do the laundry, try to avoid large washes where possible. Ideally you should do 1-2 loads per day over several days-this reduces the hydraulic shock loading on the system.

Finally, as a general rule of thumb - with all cleaning, do not excessively use, or use harsh or strong cleaners or detergents as this will affect the septic system, reducing the efficiency and can also contribute to septic system failure. So be product wise and make a habit of buying biodegradable and septic-safe products that saves you the inconvenience of a fixing a failing septic system.
