The success of BASF's refurbishment of Sydney's Australia Square

The refurbishment of iconic Sydney building Australia Square, incorporated a total internal and external facelift as well as a major redevelopment and enhancement of the building's external plaza areas. One of the more challenging aspects of the latter involved finding a suitable waterproofing solution to protect a food court and shopping arcade below the podium slab level and the car park and loading docks located beneath the forecourt area.

"One of the major issues surrounding the waterproofing at Australia Square was that of timing and logistics," says David Seal, technical manager with the Kwik Seal waterproofing division of Austress Freycinet. "Even though the total project had been divided into a number of smaller project sections, the fact that the building and food court were still occupied and operational during the refurbishment, meant we had to be sure that our waterproofing operations were also focused on minimising inconvenience to the building tenants and visitors and diners."

The solution to this complex waterproofing challenge came in the form of a waterproofing membrane system from Degussa Construction Chemicals known as Conipur 255 which sets within 20 seconds of application.

"Using the Conipur 255 waterproofing system not only provided us with a durable, high performance waterproofing solution," says Seal. "Most importantly, it also delivered a significant reduction in the total time required to complete the project.

"As an example, the larger project areas that normally would have taken up to three weeks to complete using a more traditional system were completed in just three days. Ease of application, combined with the fact that the membrane is totally inert and resistant to weather after only 30 seconds not only speeds the application process, it also results in a substantial reduction in delays for other trades working at the site."
