A spectacular face lift for a leaking old barrel vault by Australian Polycarbonate Products

A new lease of life has been granted to Melbourne's Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre, thanks to a spectacular new barrel vault using 16mm blue Danpalon.

When Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre was originally built in 1984, the barrel vault was formed using solid acrylic sheeting and a series of large glazing bars. This created problems for the owners and tenants almost immediately. The barrel vault let through too much heat and glare and leaked profusely, making the tiled floor below slippery and dangerous.

To rectify this problem, Ian Mather from Buchan Group Architects in Melbourne consulted Barry Shears from Australian Polycarbonate Products. With his 20 years of experience in glazed roofing, Barry knew that the only guaranteed method for waterproofing the barrel vault was to eliminate the use of glazing bar joints across the length and width of the sheets by retrofitting Danpalon 16mm Multicell polycarbonate.

Using Danpalon’s unique mechanical lock connection system and 20.5m continuous sheet lengths (no company throughout the World has ever produced and transported such lengths before), the “weak points” of a standard barrel vault design were eliminated and the new barrel vault is now 100% leakproof. The Danpalon system also allows for free thermal movement, alleviating the stress that causes product discolouration over time.

An additional bonus was the rapid installation time – 3000 square metres of Danpalon was easily installed a full month ahead of the six month schedule!
