  1. Asia's Largest Lighting Fair with even more Exhibition Space.
  2. 16% and 8% Growth in Exhibitors and Buyers Respectively.
  3. Held concurrently with Hong Kong International Hardware & Home Improvement Fair.

Lighting Up Your Business

Hong Kong International Lighting Fair was held from 26-29 October 2005 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Lighting Fair is the largest trade event of its kind in Asia and the second largest in the world. Now in its seventh year, the fair welcomed 1,035 exhibitors from 27 countries and regions - over 16% more than last year. First-time participants from Macao, Norway and Singapore, together with repeated exhibitors presented an impressive array of lighting products, ranging from Christmas lights to lighting for emergency, safety and entertainment use, flashlights, bulbs and lampshades.

Held concurrently with the Lighting Fair, the Hong Kong International Hardware & Home Improvement Fair offered a wide selection of hardware and home improvement items from more than 150 exhibitors. The fairs captured the natural synergy of the two industries. They also complemented each other and provided a perfect sourcing opportunity to buyers.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the twin fairs, Mr. Fred Lam, Executive Director of the HKTDC, noted that the local lighting and hardware sectors would be given a strong boost by CEPA III. The agreement allows almost all Hong Kong-origin products to enter the mainland market tariff-free, providing more prospects to all players in the industries.

A Shining Trade Hub

This year, a total of 1,035 exhibitors were presented at the fair, representing a growth of 16% in numbers. Among them, 317 were from Hong Kong and 718 from overseas, which was 9% and 19%, respectively, up compared with the previous year. The gross exhibition space also grew greatly from 30,482 sqm to 34,309 sqm.

Different types of lighting products and systems, lighting applications, design, and other related services could be found at the fair, offering buyers a one-stop-shop experience. Among the attractions, the Outdoor Lighting Section made a welcome return to the fair after a stunning debut last year. This special section housed 47 companies which showcased the latest new ideas in areas ranging from street lamps, garden lamps and flashlights to DIY and home improvement outdoor lighting.

The result of the fair on the visitor side was also spectacular. This year, the fair attracted more than 23,700 buyers from 116 countries and regions, with 41% (9,797) from Hong Kong and 59% (13,941) from overseas. Chinese mainland remained to be the top visiting country with 4,445 buyers (+16%). Other top visiting countries and regions were the USA, Taiwan, Japan, the UK, Australia, Germany, Canada, Korea and Singapore. In additions, a total of 73 buying missions with over 2,700 buyers from around the world were invited to visit the two fairs. Among them, VIP buyers like Ace Hardware and W.A.C. Lighting Group from the US, BALS and Koizumi Lighting from Japan; Cantire and Rona Inc from Canada; Beacon Lighting and Gunns' Hardware from Australia were invited.

More than a Trade Show

The fair was more than a perfect trading hub. It also promised a value-added programme, with industry-based seminars and plenty of opportunities for networking and information gathering.

During the fair period, industry experts were invited to speak on topics including "Regulatory and Technical Update for Lighting Products to Europe" (LVD, EMC, WEEE, RoHS & CE Marking), "Solid State Lighting Technology and Energy Saving", "Tech-lighting: A must for a Better Future Environment", effective credit management and intellectual property rights protection.

A Joint Cocktail Reception for the Lighting Fair and the Hardware & Home Improvement Fair was held on the 2nd fair day to give a networking opportunity for buyers and exhibitors from the two industries. Besides cocktail and seminars, the Horse-Racing Buffet Night was another excellent chance for industry players to network and enjoy a unique experience.

Furthmore, a Living Light display was set up at the fairground to show how the properties of light were used through various lighting designs.
