Timber decking from Sydney Flooring - all decked out and ready
for summer

As the weather starts to warm Australians can look forward to a summer of dining, entertaining and relaxing outdoors and there's nothing more enjoyable than having the perfect spot at home to take advantage of the summer warmth.

"The Australian passion for outdoor living has led to quite a design revolution from the way we furnish our outdoor spaces to the materials and technology we choose to incorporate into our outdoor living areas," says Bill Durkowyak, Founder of Sydney Flooring, Australia's longest operating timber flooring specialists.

"Whether you need an additional room for entertaining or a secluded spot to relax the obvious solution may be to add a deck - or renovate an existing one - but unless you know what you're doing before you start, it might not be the simplest solution," says Bill.

Bill says the first step is to choose the right timber, but you also need to talk to the experts about moisture from the surrounding area which may affect your deck, cross ventilation to maintain stability plus the best finish and ongoing maintenance.

After 50 years in the business Bill has tried many shapes, sizes and species of timber and he now gravitates to Australian hardwood or Merbau as his recommended choice for decking timbers. This may be dressed or sawn boards, depending on the project or the look the customer wants to achieve. Sydney Flooring only uses Class 1 & 2 seasoned wood which ensures top class durability.

"Tallowwood and Merbau are probably the best wearing timbers for decking due to the abundance of natural oils in the wood which repels water better than other timbers," says Bill. "However, Ironbark, Spotted Gum and Blackbutt are also popular decking choices."

The standard size for decking is 86mm but Bill says a new trend in outdoor decking is emerging with many clients selecting wider pieces of timber up to 130mm or 140mm wide for their decks.

While Sydney Flooring offers materials and advice for the DIY handyman their installation experts mainly use Deck-Max™ fixing system which ensures a quality finish and increased aesthetic appeal on every decking installation.

"Sydney Flooring also offers a decking oil and maintenance program, both of which are essential to preserve the beauty of your new deck," says Bill.

"Get it right the first time and a deck will truly enhance your lifestyle," says Bill.
