Davco helps school students paint their own tiles for school project

The toilets at Newport Public School, on Sydney’s northern beaches NSW, were in need of some serious help so the teachers organised a special project that saw all 767 students involved.

A creative plan was conceived to have the students paint their own tiles which would then be glazed and fired ready for re-tiling the inside and outside walls of the toilets.

Every child was asked for a donation of a $2 coin to help with the cost of the expensive ceramic paints. The teachers then sought help from the local community. Scott McAlpine from Exclusive Tiles in Brookvale generously donated all the tiles for painting and for the checkered effect in the finished project.

Scott also funded a tiler for the two weeks of the school holidays when the project was completed. Exclusive Tiles Brookvale are proud of their ongoing community sponsorship programmes.

According to Judi Morrison, head of the organising committee, the students’ parents were very much involved with the mums and dads painting, rendering, installing partitions and skylights.

“They also helped with the enormous task every week of organising school classes into the hall for the tile painting. They ensured every child in the school had a tile with their name on it.

“One of the school teacher’s wives fired all the tiles for us in a home kiln, 28 at a time. That was a very special effort considering she is not even a parent and we were on holidays!

“It has taken five months to complete the project and it was so much fun. The school community is rightfully proud of the project and the feedback has been fantastic. The best thing about this whole project is that the children have ownership and can take pride in an area of the school that belongs to them” said Judi.

A range of Davco Construction Material products were donated by Davco for the Newport School project. They included Ultrabond a 2-part bond enhancer for use over the existing tiles, eliminating the need for major surface preparation.

Also Davco’s SE-7, a premium grade off-white cement based adhesive combined with Davelastic, a flexible acrylic polymer additive created a very high strength and water resistant adhesive that gave great coverage for all walls and floors of the school toilets.

Davco’s Sanitized Colorgrout and Superfine White Grout, both mould free cementitious grouts, was used to finish the installation.

Newport Primary School now has the best and most unique toilet facilities of any school in Australia.
