Fly Forbo winners - Carr Design Group

CARR has been named the 2006 Fly Forbo & Fly to Europe competition winner for a project that effectively achieved a modern and contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a rigorous commitment to the principles of ecologically sustainable development (ESD).
CARR Design Group was given a brief from property developers Equiset to produce an office tenancy that had the right balance between function and visual appeal.
The team won praise for the strong contemporary design, supported by the use of three Forbo products - environmentally sound Forbo Furniture Linoleum and Marmoleum Walton, part of the Marmoleum Global 2 collection of natural linoleum products, as well SafeSTEP safety flooring.
Furniture Linoleum makes a striking first impression in the front reception area. This linoleum, in classic black, was also chosen to enhance a large boardroom table and set down joinery and as well was used in other prominent meeting areas.
Marmoleum Walton, in a matching black, was an ideal easy-to-maintain choice for the office break out flooring.
The high-performance, slip-resistant SafeSTEP provided a dependable option for wet areas. To maintain a strong visual link throughout, SafeSTEP was also chosen in black for consistency.
"Furniture Linoleum is a popular material with designers for its unique and attractive texture and excellent colour depth. We feel that it has been used particularly well in this project to create a visually stunning interior without any compromise of ESD principles," said Angus Fotheringhame, Managing Director of Forbo Australia.
CARR Design Group confirmed the majority of finishes specified in the project had been tested and approved by major environmental bodies and emphasised the use of sustainable materials to achieve its goals.
"Effectively adopting new technologies and driven by the dual objectives of reduced energy bills and lower staff turn over, the challenge for Carr was to create an office fit out for Equiset which achieved sustainability as a priority, integrating people friendliness and common sense design. The Forbo range of linoleum which is made from raw materials including linseed oil, limestone, corn flour, wood flour (controlled forests), jute, rosin (from pine trees) and natural pigments (has the Nordic Swan Environmental label) contributed to the integrated palette prepared for the Equiset tenancy," said Daniel Stellini, Design Director.
CARR Design Group was also quick to point out that with careful project management and clever material choices, sustainable design strategies did not incur a premium to construction costs when compared to conventionally designed building interiors.
The Fly Forbo & Fly to Europe competition, run in conjunction with the Interior Design Awards, recognises outstanding use of Forbo products in design innovation.
The prize for the competition is a trip for two to Europe including return flights, 12 nights accommodation and $1500 spending money. Also included is a visit to 100% design in London and a stop at Forbo's Design Studios in Holland to meet for the Forbo design team, leading consultants who have attracted many accolades including two prestigious Red Dot awards for product design and innovation.
