Hidden rain water bladders from Eco Sac® - space saving tanks

Australian households have a water "footprint"* of around 341,000
litres a head per day (equal to more than 2435 full bathtubs of water per person).
Rainwater storage is one of the easiest ways for households to use water wisely and
this is usually done by installing a standard rainwater tank. However, last year an
innovative space-saving tank called eco sac® was launched - essentially a large,
sturdy rainwater bladder that can be installed out of sight under the house, deck
or flooring.
The rainwater bladder can capture water faster than traditional rainwater tanks and
once the bladder is full, any excess water diverts to the existing storm water system,
ensuring it will never over-fill.
"Eco Sac hidden rainwater bladder eliminates the need for intrusive tanks that ruin
garden aesthetics," said Andrew Waudby, Managing Director. "It lies flat on the ground,
cradled in a galvanised steel frame which stops the bladder from rolling into structural
supports as it rises and falls with the water level."
"It is the only flexible rainwater storage system that is manufactured from fabric which
has been tested and independently accredited to the Australian standard of products for
use in contact with drinking water."
Andrew explained that while drinking rainwater was not permitted in some areas, the quality
of the water stored in an eco sac was safe for human consumption and could also be safely
used in swimming pools, fish ponds, the garden and reticulated into washing machines,
dishwashers and toilets.
North Balgowlah resident Tony Pratt installed his 4800-litre eco sac under his house in
December 2006 and has since halved his water consumption because it is connected to his
shower, bath and laundry.
"It's working really well and has only run out on two occasions over summer when there
had been no rain for some time," he said. "It really is a fantastic space-saving and water
saving solution" said Tony.
The Pratts are are now considering installing a second eco sac to tide them over during summer's
driest spells. With their tank lasting three and a half weeks of no rain (and that's with
shower-loving teenage girls in the family!), two tanks would clearly get them through Sydney's
dry summers.
