Danpalon light architecture for the Lake Ainsworth Sports Hall

Located on a university campus, the Alice Milliat Dorms include 298
studios of 18 square metres each. This is a large program that led the architects to
design the project in several blocks, to integrate it better into its environment.
Evelyne Rocheteau, "From a town planning point of view, this fragmentation avoids
the systematic linear repetition of the facades. The block design also contributes
to scaling down the size of the program."
Seeking an architecture design on a human scale emphasises the comfort of the dorms
and involves the users;
"This organisation, by grouping together small units of about 60 students, lets the
users take over the space."
Differentiation
These cube colours immediately evoke images of childhood and games; "We were looking
for this games dimension. The site also includes other structures for teaching, which
have a fairly rigorous architecture. We wanted to make a clear difference between
them and the living quarters that are more colourful and dynamic." In red, yellow,
blue and green, these blocks infuse the project's general appearance with a feeling
of freedom and the characteristic life of the student worlds.
"We did not want the
colour to appear to distant or even aggressive. Blocks of 'pure' colour would have
caused a visual presence that was too assertive," the Architect continues.
Dematerialisation
This subtle research into the use of colour led the architects to entirely cover
the fronts of the blocks with a skin of Danpalon in clear finish. Depending on the
light and angle of view, each building reveals a constantly renewed sight of chromatic
variations.
"Danpalon created interesting effects in the dematerialisation of colour. During the
day some colours fade away and disappear, while others become clearly visible." Under
the Danpalon light-brush, all these nuances of life's colours find expression.
