Dual Purpose EJ HEELPROOF™

There is a growing trend in Australia where developments cater for a mix of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. On the one hand, safety for pedestrians is paramount but required load ratings such as Class D for vehicular movement means trenches and grates must be up to the task.

EJ has manufactured a robust HEELPROOF™ ductile iron grate with apertures of less than 9mm. Pedestrian load ratings are usually no more than A or even B Class, but these EJ grates work for both categories of load rating, including Class D.

EJ was the choice for the massive new Barangaroo site on Sydney Harbour, with an installation of around 300 metres to service this pedestrian/vehicle shared area.

The area has to cater for an anticipated heavy pedestrian traffic invasion but also be capable of allowing the movement of vehicles such as delivery, emergency and service traffic. Being strong, ductile iron, HEELPROOF™ grates are not only made to take the heavier loads and the associated wear and tear but also to prevent falls from snagged heels.

EJ commissioned independent load testing of their new HEELPROOF™ grates to ensure that they do meet Class D specifications. Stock is available in three widths: 150mm, 225mm and 300mm. They are now available in most Australia branches.
