How to work safely and efficiently in a scissor lift or boom lift - South Eastern Access

Falls from height are the most common cause of fatalities on construction sites. This is particularly so when working from unsecured ladders or unstable scaffolding. To maximise your safety at height you should consider using an Elevated Work Platform (EWP) such as a Scissor Lift or Boom Lift.

However when using an EWP you must consider the following safety issues;

  1. Do not operate an EWP unless you have received training in its use and safety rules. Ask South Eastern Access about training for your "Yellow Card" through the EWP Association of Australia.
  2. Never use an EWP on soft, uneven surfaces. Always check for obstacles such as pits, ramps etc.
  3. Always wear an anchored safety harness while working in a Boom type EWP.
  4. Always check that the safe working load written on the EWP is not exceeded.
  5. The EWP should not be raised in high wind conditions.
(Further information on EWP safety issues may be obtained from the Incolink Safety Handbook for the Building & Construction Industry 2007).
