Basalt is the most abundant igneous rock. Most present day volcanoes erupt
basalt material. There are numerous varieties of basalt, and S & N Bros. select quarries
and stone within those quarries that are suitable for the dimensional stone industry. Mostly
the colour of basalt stone varies from grey to black, but small quantities also can be found
in such colours as green, blue, red, purple, brown etc.
As an observation, the dark areas visible on Earth's moon, the lunar maria, are plains of flood
basaltic lava flows. Basalt compositions are rich in Magnesium Oxide and Calcium Oxide and
low in Silicon Dioxide and Sodium Oxide plus Potassium Oxide relative to most common igneous
rocks.
