The unique ventilation requirement for the Con-Edison transformers established the
conception of a podium like design at the base of the building. This stainless steel
screen (designed and manufactured by Johnson Screens) was conceived to visually support
the crystal like tower. A third element, an internal blue volume, or "locking block,"
serves to visually and conceptually link the stainless steel podium screen wall and
glass volumes into one extruded form.
