Complex panel design for The Glasshouse

SUPAWOOD timber panels dominate the architecture throughout The Glasshouse at Port Macquarie and are intrinsic to the building's acoustic excellence.

Designed by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer and built by Hansen Yuncken, the building has become a landmark in Australian contemporary architecture, collecting an accolade of awards including three for Australian Timber Design.

Throughout the entire project SUPAWOOD worked closely with the design team to manufacture and install over 2000m2 of SUPAVENEER Spotted Gum NTV panels for 3 key interior areas.

Shell Wall: Visible through the exterior glass skin of the building, the timber Shell Wall in the foyers extends over 12m from ground level to the height of the building. Used here are SUPALINE solid panels with hand applied thickened red edges and concealed fixings and have been cleverly overlapped to wrap around curves in the walls.

Theatre Interior: The view from the stage of the 600 seat theatre is awe-inspiring. Towering up and curving around on every side, the panels are custom perforated with a black infill pattern reminiscent of a music score. Both functional and exceptionally decorative, the panels are absorptive, reflective and diffusive to meet the demanding acoustic specifications.

Twisted Panels: The most complex lining challenge of this project met by SUPAWOOD involved fabricating unusual twisted acoustic panels for the theatre. These panels were fabricated as complete units in SUPAWOOD's factory then transported to site ready to mount.

This project showcased SUPAWOOD's ability to deliver an extremely intrinsic and detailed paneling project from the initial design through to installation to meet the quality requirements expected by the Architects, Acoustic Consultants and the client. The staff, patrons and performers alike are all visually and audibly moved by the contribution the SUPAWOOD panelling has provided to the venue's experience.
