Anti-slip Floor Tiles for Accessible Designs by Johnson Tiles

Johnson Tiles

Accessible design for residential and commercial properties is a growing trend in Australia. The conscious effort to support persons with disabilities, the ageing population and those who are in need of a safe living and working environment have paved the way for the implementation of safety standards in flooring solutions.

Slip resistance is an important feature for floor tiles. According to WorkSafe Victoria, more than 3100 Victorian workers suffered serious injuries because of slips, trips and falls in 2009-2010. Falls continue to be one of the leading causes of deaths from injury for people aged 65 and above. Slips and falls are avoidable accidents, and it's up to architects and designers to help lower the chances of accidents by specifying the right materials.

Johnson Tiles, leading manufacturers of porcelain and ceramic tiles have taken measures to ensure pedestrian safety. They have tested their products in both the Oil-Wet Ramp Test and the Wet Pendulum test, and work closely with designers, in developing a conducive flooring for their projects.

Oil-Wet Ramp Testing
The ramp test is the most common testing method for floor surfaces found in Appendix D of AS 4586-2013 or better known as the Slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surface materials. The test by placing a product sample in a torsion-resistant platform while highly qualified test personnel walk back and forth to find the point of slip. Johnson Tiles products have varying R-Rating for every product.
