Hedges have a variety of uses in landscape. A hedge can be used as a screen to hide a fence or to private privacy from the street or neighbours, a border around gardens to compliment or used as part of a path to guide visitors through your garden.

When choosing plants for your hedge you must first consider the following facts:

  1. Climate - Choose a plant that will tolerate seasonal conditions like frost, heavy rain, coastal winds, hot and cold temperatures and most importantly surviving the drought.

  2. Height - Hedges can be tall or short so choose your plants according to the height you want them to grow to.

  3. How many plants do I need? - In principal to achieve a thick, bushy hedge quickly it is advisable to distance the plants approx 1/2 the width of the plant apart. For example if the plant is 40cm wide the spacing would be 20cm. For a smaller hedge or slow growing hedge it is recommended that you plant much closer.

  4. Keeping your plants as a hedge - Pruning your plants in the first few years is a important part of forming a dense hedge. In principle you should prune at least one third off each time you prune. This will ensure new growth particularly at the base of the plant.

  5. Which Plant? - Plantworld has many plants suitable for hedging however not all plants hedge well. Choose bushy shrubs that respond well to a good prune.
