Alimak Hek engineers "bend" for construction of Convesso residential tower

Convesso Concavo is one of the latest in Lend Lease's Australian developments and is tipped to become Australia's most sustainable luxury residential towers. Located in Melbourne's Docklands precinct, each tower will stand at 32 stories, comprising a combined total of 455 apartments. Construction of the Convesso tower was completed in February 2012, with Concavo construction due to begin mid-2012 for a 2014 completion.

Alimak Hek installed a twin Scando 28/37 FC on site at Convesso, providing safe and efficient vertical access to 32 levels during construction. Given the contoured nature of the building, Lend Lease found it difficult to erect scaffolding that would allow for easy transportation of materials from the Scando construction hoists, to the various levels. As a result, Alimak Hek engineers, designed and manufactured unique platforms with 1.8m long splayed ties, that would fit the angled façade of the building.

The installation of 44 of these unique platforms, distributed across 22 levels, gave operators safe access to each level of the building face. With a payload capacity of 2.8 tones, each platform was angled out from the building exterior, enabling the safe and easy movement of men and materials from the construction hoist to the various levels.

Not only did these unique platforms enable pallets of materials to be pre-loaded onto each floor, but reduced site costs associated with the use of scaffolding. Fitted with extended hand rails and safety screens, the purpose-built work platforms replaced the need for scaffolding between the hoist and the building façade. This allowed operators to simultaneously work off the platforms directly, and use them as an access bridge between hoist and building levels.

Lend Lease were extremely pleased with the quality of service offered by Alimak Hek during the construction of the Convesso tower. Particular praise was given to Alimak Hek's quality of maintenance and servicing, ability to stay ahead of the pre-determined work schedule and the speed and ease with which the hoists were dismantled and removed from site. As one Lend Lease representative affirms, "Alimak's approach to this [project] was particularly good; from design through to offsite fabrication they were always in front".

The twin Alimak Scando 28/37 FC, and the unique work platforms that accompanied them, were in operation on the Convesso site until the building's completion in February 2012. Construction on the second Convaco tower is due to commence mid-way through 2012.
