Heavy Duty Manhole Covers: SELFLEVEL® Concrete Access Assembly by EJ
SELFLEVEL® heavy duty manhole covers from EJ are engineered specifically to address the key issues associated with road surfaces, such as frost heave or uplift, settling of manhole covers, site deterioration, inclined street surface, and cracking of concrete or asphalt.
Aside from protecting pedestrians and vehicles from the complex subsurface infrastructure, the access assembly is designed to accommodate various movements, keeping a perfect alignment with the road surface.
How Do SELFLEVEL® Heavy Duty Manhole Covers Work?
SELFLEVEL® heavy duty manhole covers are composed of an upper frame, and below-ground guide frame. The surrounding road surface supports the top frame, and allows the frame to move in place, creating a "floating" effect. When installed, SELFLEVEL® movement reaches a maximum 5° angle, while moving with the surface. This "floating" mechanism disperses traffic vibration and shock, thus prolonging the service life of road infrastructure, as well as underground utilities.
EJ incorporates properties to improve reliability and ergonomics, for reduced strain and ease of use. SELFLEVEL® heavy duty manhole covers are equipped with the patented, closed-design EPIC® Pick Bar solution for improved stability and leverage.
The below-ground guide frame facilitates self-centering. It has a multi-functional seal that keeps the top frame centred within the guide frame. The seal also prevents the two frames from coming in contact with one another. Apart from keeping the frames from touching, the multi-functional seal prevents water infiltration and debris from entering the manhole covers.
SELFLEVEL® manhole covers are also equipped with adjustment brackets and tabs that keep the upper frame in a raised position during the pouring of concrete. Once the concrete has settled, the set of adjustment brackets and tabs are removed, and can be reused. The steel sleeve creates a protective void against concrete interference. This also helps the upper frame align with the road surface.
The concrete access assembly is the ideal solution for changes caused by heavy traffic loads, and different pavement slope. SELFLEVEL® responds well to heavy traffic loads, exceeding AASHTO M 306 standard specification for drainage, sewer, utility and related castings. This specification is particularly applicable to structures for engineering use where load bearing is a consideration, including frames, grates, rings and covers for inlets, and manholes.
EJ focuses on the importance of safety, function, ergonomics and design in creating excellent infrastructure solutions for the built environment. The SELFLEVEL® manhole covers can be customised with unique lettered covers, municipal or corporate logos, and city council coat of arms.
