VersaTac® granite tactile indicator rocks from Eigen at Newman College

The original buildings at Newman College were built during 1916 to 1918 and were designed by architect Walter Burley Griffin; they are believed to be some of his best work. It is an innovative use of stone and a structural form of the reinforced concrete dome was one of the earliest and largest domes of its type at the time. The creative use of stone with smooth surfaces and a rough base blend to an unusual and organic form which harmonizes with the landscape. It is commonly accepted that the overall design of Newman College is a quality design of outstanding merit and beauty.

When Paul Morgan Architect was commissioned to design for the renovation of this masterpiece they could not find a suitable Tactile Ground Surface Indicator product that is going to suit its style and grandeur until they call up Eigen Stones' Managing Director Michael Lim. Paul Morgan's architects were astounded when Michael showed them the Modulized Tactile Indicator sample - VersaTac®, which is made from Natural Granite.

With the support of Eigen's overseas' Granite quarries and manufacturing factories, Eigen was able to produce a tailor made modulized granite Tactile Indicator with the right colour coordination for the Newman College's building and the luminance contrast as requested by the AS/NZS 1428.4 standards. The outcome of this combination pleased both the architect and their client.

Eigen is the only Tactile Ground Surface Indicator manufacturer in Australia that has its specialized factory dedicated to the manufacturing of VersaTac® Tactile; others do not have the expertise to produce VersaTac® in a commercially acceptable form. Please feel free to drop us a call to discuss your Tactile Indicator requirements and we will provide you with the solution you are looking for.

(Note: VersaTac® is made from two components each of which is made from natural granite parts. First, dimensioned granite pavers are drilled with holes positioned apart as described in the AS/NZS 1428.4; then granite inserts of the size of a Tactile dome with extended stem are cored from granite of a highest colour contrast to the pavers. Each 300 x 300mm base paver requires 36 individual inserts completing a Tactile Indicator tile.
