Foamex has prolific experience in the design, manufacture and distribution of polystyrene foam blocks in Australia. With a track record spanning 35 years and counting, the Victorian-based company is distinguished as one of the pioneers of polystyrene innovation within the building, construction, packaging and creative industries. Pledged to international standards of quality, Foamex has rendered outstanding service to a wide scope of small-scale to multinational projects across the country.
The Port of Melbourne is the largest and busiest port for containerised and general cargo in Australasia. With over 30 commercial berths, the port is visited by around 3000 ships annually contributing to an estimated total trade value around $102 billion. It is arguably the country's most important maritime trade hub, supporting the prosperity of thousands of businesses across Victoria and south-eastern Australia.
The Victorian Government continues to implement redevelopment projects for the Port of Melbourne to streamline day-to-day operations, and provide better, optimum service. Foamex is proud to be part of the recent Port of Melbourne Port Capacity Project, which aims to redevelop the Webb Dock into an international container handling facility.
The Port of Melbourne Port of Capacity Project enlisted Foamex to provide their signature Styroboard® expanded polystyrene sheets (EPS) for the construction of new roads to Webb Dock Drive and Kooringa Way below the West Gate Bridge. The early stage of the $1.6-billion project saw the upgrade of the pipe works beneath the road. Styroboard® EPS served as the lightweight fill layered on top of the pipes before road construction, providing optimal protection from the continuous load of road traffic.
Styroboard® EPS was chosen on account of its M grade quality, and inherent lightweight profile. Foamex only uses top-quality materials, proven building techniques and the latest technologies during production, resulting in dimensionally stable polystyrene foam blocks. While low in weight, Styroboard® EPS is flexible and durable to withstand significant load stress in the long term. Additionally, the low water absorption properties of Styroboard® EPS provides additional protection under harsh weather conditions.
Foamex supplied more than 1000 units of Styroboard® EPS to meet the specified requirements of the Port of Melbourne Port Capacity Project. The blocks were wrapped and sealed after having layered to specific depths over the pipe works. In collaboration with BMD Construction, the Foamex team were involved in the first stage of the project from February 2015 until its completion in May 2016.
