Tontine Sound Batts
ACOUSTIC DESIGN MANUAL

Tontine Sound Batts (TSB) are ideal for use in walls and partitions, where they provide excellent
acoustic and thermal performance. They have been designed to fit between studs of partitions and walls - simply
staple the Sound Batt to the back of the plasterboard ensuring that the Sound Batt is tucked between the studs.

When tested to Early Fire Hazard Properties of Material Test, Australian Standard 1530: Part 3 - 1989 by the AWTA,
all TSB products complied with The Building Code of Australia.
Construction systems, such as plasterboard wall and ceiling assemblies, are laboratory tested to establish their
sound insulation characteristics. The laboratory test involves the installation of a specimen between two concrete
rooms which are isolated from each other, so that only direct transmission can take place. A steady known sound
level of various frequencies is generated on one side of the wall and then measured in the room on the other side.
From these results the sound transmission loss through the specimen can be calculated for each specified frequency.
The ability of a material or system to block or attenuate the transmission of sound from one area to another is
measured by transmission loss as described above. The higher the transmission loss, the more the material attenuates
the sound. The Sound Transmission Class (STC) is a single figure rating that describes the transmission loss performance
of walls and floors.
Broadly speaking, the higher the STC of a partition the more effective it will be at reducing sound transmission.
For example, when installed in a standard metal 64mm stud wall with 13mm plasterboard on both sides, TSB will give
an STC of .47. At a rating such as this, even very loud sounds will barely be distinguishable, if at all, through
the wall.
Several of the STC results for partitions have been determined using a computer model developed from extensive
research carried out at the CSIRO North Ryde Laboratories in 1990. The model and estimates have been prepared by
Peter R. Knowland and Associated - Acoustic Consultants.
All test reports have been issued by NATA registered Laboratories. Testing has been conducted according to relevant
Australian Standards.
