Peer Industries warn against sub-standard imported rolled steel

Peer Industries raised the issue of sub-standard Chinese made rolled steel products being sold in the Australian building market late last year. These imports are being sold as meeting AS1397-2001 with regard to hot dip zinc content.

Imported products tested do not meet the Z275 zinc coating required for normal usage, and in most cases do not meet the Z100 minimum standard for metal surfaces that can installed after being painted. A copy of the AS1397-2001 zinc coating minimums is attached.

Imports of these sub-standard products are prevalent in Melbourne and Perth and major contractors, architects, engineers and sub-contractors alike must be aware of the risks involved in installing products in their projects.

Of most concern to Peer Industries is that these substandard products are being installed in projects where Peer products are also being installed, and the systems are being mixed. We are aware of Peer top cross rail, clips, acoustic mounts and heavy gauge or special length stud/track are being mixed with sub-standard imported product.

Peer Industries reiterates that our warranty will be voided by mixing of Peer and imported product, and that Peer's engineers will not signoff projects where imported product is mixed in with Peer product.

Peer Industries remains committed to manufacturing quality steel building products at our expanded plant in Queensland. Our products are proudly branded Peer and are tested and fire rated to meet the stringent demands of Australian Standards.
