Servicing Your Septic System from Bio Septic

You may have had a septic system for years, or just recently installed one. You may be about to move to the country from the city, or you may be thinking about installing a new septic system. Whatever the situation, this blog will explain the importance of constantly servicing and maintaining your septic system on a regular basis.

A BioSeptic system, or other aerated wastewater treatment systems (AWTS) is a compact sewage treatment plant comprising a biological process, and as such requires regular servicing and maintenance. A municipal sewage treatment plant is maintained on a daily basis -this is not necessary for your BioSeptic system.

Proper installation by a qualified plumber and maintenance of your septic system will maximise your system's life and has a high level of performance and reliability. Good maintenance reduces the risk of system breakdowns, and may save you from costly repairs or system replacement.

However, we recommend that your septic system be properly maintained at regular 3-monthly intervals. When installing a BioSeptic system, you would have received a Licence to Operate a Sewage Management Facility by your local council.

A condition of the Licence is that you have an annual service agreement with either BioSeptic Pty Limited, your local agent or another service provider authorised by your local council. Your local council requires that your septic system be correctly serviced every three months.

The following items will be checked at each 3-monthly service:

  • Efficiency of the chlorinator
  • Chlorine tablets - replenishing as required
  • Irrigation pump
  • Operation of the blower (including cleaning the blower filter)
  • Efficiency of the sludge and skimmer return system
  • Condition of all pipes and hoses
  • Efficiency of the irrigation sprays

The following items will be tested at each 3-monthly service:

  • High level water alarm
  • Low air alarm
  • Clarity of the water
  • pH level of the water
  • Free residual chlorine level

The following annual check/test will be performed:

  • Observation of sludge accumulation in the septic tank

Owning a septic system carries heavy responsibilities, this includes ensuring that your system is safe and working properly. Servicing your septic tank will keep it happy, healthy and working to your benefit.

How are you going with servicing your septic system? Are you due for a service now? Contact BioSeptic for more information or share this article with someone you know who owns a septic system.
