Fantech Ventilation Products now Bushfire Code Compliant

Bushfire code compliant products now in Fantech range

As Australians, we're only too aware that many parts of our country experience severe bushfire threat, particularly during Summer. Bushfires are capable of destroying most types of buildings, with hot, burning embers as their main weapon.

Normally driven by a hot, dry wind, the embers will enter through any opening in the building structure. A roof ventilator, or any natural ventilation opening, is an opportunity for burning embers to gain access into a structure and start a fire.

Fantech have redeveloped some of their key products to comply with the Standard "AS3959-1999, Construction of buildings in bushfire prone areas", a Standard compiled by The Australian Standards Association. This careful process has ensured that the necessary design modifications have not reduced the overall performance of the product.

The Standard considers three categories of bushfire hazard;
level 1 - medium, Level 2 - high and Level 3 - extreme.

The Standard defines the protection required for vents and weep holes as follows:

Level 1 Construction
Vents and weep holes in a Level 1 construction shall be protected with spark guards made from corrosion resistant, bronze, steel or aluminium mesh with a maximum aperture size of 1.8mm.

Level 2 and 3 Construction
Same as Level 1 except aluminium mesh shall not be used.

Roof Ventilators
All components of roof ventilators in a level 1 construction shall be constructed of non combustible material and shall be sealed against the entry of sparks with corrosion resistant steel or bronze mesh having a maximum aperture size of 1.8mm.
