Just like all other types of steels, this one is an alloy. It contains iron and carbon. Its main alloying element is chromium. In order for the steel to be stainless, the alloy content must exceed 10%. The minimum chromium content in most materials of this type is 12%. The maximum content is usually 20%, but there is no formally set upper limit.

This metal is strong and easy to fabricate. Its most valuable property is its high resistance to corrosion. It is resistant to the corrosive effects of air, water, acids and bases. The martensitic form is characterised by greater carbon content. It can be as high as 1%.
