Important Facts on Stainless Steel

Since its discovery a century ago, stainless steel has become one of the most widely used metals. It has applications in many different industries. It is highly valued for its properties. Learn important facts about this type of metal. This knowledge will help you when you select material for a specific industrial project.

Just like all other types of steels, this one is an alloy. It contains iron and carbon. Its main alloying element is chromium. In order for the steel to be stainless, the alloy content must exceed 10%. The minimum chromium content in most materials of this type is 12%. The maximum content is usually 20%, but there is no formally set upper limit.

Stainless Steel Properties, Forms and Uses

This metal is strong and easy to fabricate. Its most valuable property is its high resistance to corrosion. It is resistant to the corrosive effects of air, water, acids and bases. Furthermore, the smooth surface of the material is highly hygienic. It requires cleaning with chemical products which have lower concentration of the active ingredient in order to stay clean.

Stainless steel comes in three main forms. The ferritic form is characterised with carbon content which is lower than 0.1%. The austenitic form is the most common. It has other alloying elements in addition to chromium. These are nickel, nitrogen and manganese. It is sufficiently strong and tough and highly ductile as well. The martensitic form is characterised by greater carbon content. It can be as high as 1%.

There are many different applications of this metal. It is widely used in architecture and civil engineering for the making of structural sections, cladding, railing and door and window fittings. In the transportation industry, it is utilised for making the bodies of cars and ships. It is also used for making equipment for food and drink production, surgical tools and domestic appliances.

Due to its great durability, stainless steel is a cost-efficient material as well.
