In spite of the fact that it is easy and affordable to build an energy efficient house, self interested housing associations, government apathy, vested interests and simply a lack of understanding are all contributors to this colossal waste of energy resources and needless damage to the environment.

Countless debates and arguments about all forms of power generation avoid the core issue: if all houses were mandated to be seriously energy and water efficient and existing houses given a worthwhile tax incentive to upgrade, we could seriously cut greenhouse gas emissions and enjoy much lower utility bills. Unfortunately, current regulations are just a toe in the water, compared to what we could all achieve, easily and economically.

As thinking people we need to be more passionate about 'rattling the cages' of our elected politicians. There is no time for complacency. The recent searing temperatures are a powerful indication that our children and grandchildren may never inherit the way of life that we take for granted.

Finally, we all have the ability to change. We can be part of the solution not the problem. Many baby boomers I meet are concerned about climate change and they are using their spending power wisely to create supremely comfortable, energy efficient homes. Also more and more first home owners understand the need for less wasteful, tighter built houses that are fully insulated - roof, ceiling, walls, windows and doors. They demand product performance data before they buy ... do you?
