Maximise your rainwater this summer

Now that the weather is hotter, the amount of rain we will be receiving will be inconsistent and at low levels throughout the next few months; therefore maximising your rainwater use is essential.

As it's meant to be a hot one this summer, utilising your rainwater use in the garden should be carefully planned and thought out. The best time to water your garden in summer is either early in the morning or later in the evening, as if it's watered in the middle of the day the water will evaporate.

See the following suggestions to best save and utilise your rainwater this summery season:

- As it is warming up, the water in your tank will not be moving around as much; therefore make sure your tank water is aerated so as not to become stagnant.

- As the wet months are slowing down, this is the best time to do a tank clean. Tanks gradually accumulate sediment and need to be cleaned out every few years.

- The weathers heating up so that means more mozzies! Make sure you check any protective mesh and replace them if damaged - this will help prevent algae from forming and mosquitoes breeding.

- Keep your gutters and your roof catchment clear from debris such as leaves, twigs and vermin.

- Make sure that overflows from air conditioners don't discharge into the overflow area of your rainwater tank this summer.

- Haven't got a rainwater tank? The best time to install your new tank is in the summer months, as then it will be ready to go when the wettest months of the year arrive.

Rainwater tanks are available in a large variety of shapes, materials and sizes. Over the years, your family may have grown or your water consumption may have increased, which means what you installed years ago may not be suitable today. Alternatively, you may not have a rainwater tank and are thinking of installing one.
