FIXING DEFLECTION IN SLABS

CASE STUDY:

cementious floor thickness graph and table

Clearly, this is a huge weight saving.

As buildings become older, the incidence of deflection in slabs in high and low rise buildings is occurring more frequently. This deflection is usually not noticed until refurbishment or renovations happen and then become a problem when new walls, fittings and floor coverings need to be laid or installed.

FACT:

Minor deflection under 15mm is not normally a problem, but once the deflections are over 15mm, the floor levels can become critical.

THE PROBLEM:

The incidence of deflection from 15 - 80mm and above is not uncommon; the problem is how to fix it?

Traditional methods have been to use a cement topping mix comprising of sand, cement and stone, but, depending on thickness and distance between beams, this can and generally does cause further deflection due to the weight of materials used.

Furthermore, if the slab is not prepared properly, delamination or druminess can occur causing cracking and the subsequent release of the topping. Although this is generally not a problem under carpet, it can be a disaster when tiles or marble finishes have been laid. With traditional mixes the topping can only be laid down to a thickness of approx 30mm and then cementious products need to be used to feather out at edges.

Weight of a Traditional topping mix can vary from 2200 kg m3 up to 3000kg m3 (Based on 50mm thick a topping would weigh between 110kg-150 kg m2 )

For example, 25 mm average thickness on a 50 m2 floor would require 2750 kg of topping.

Ask yourself: What sort of stress would that place on the building?

THE SOLUTION:

By using a blend of Cementious products, we have developed a product that cuts the weight of topping mixes down to 1000 kg - 1200 kg M3. This product offers a greater adhesion to existing slabs along with a higher compressive strength than traditional toppings with a thickness varying from 0-120mm.
