La Escandella Terracotta Roof Tiles

Why La Escandella?

The most advanced technology and facilities on the market are concentrated on the third floor at La Escandella, used only for making ceramic roof tiles. This is a fully automated process which allows one of the greatest production levels worldwide to be obtained. The clays are carefully selected and stored so to keep perfectly. Daily controls ensure that these are always in the very best condition, ready to be used.

Spray-drying the clay is a key process in providing the quality and texture of the roof tile. This process obtains a clean, evenly-coloured product with a unique texture, no impurities or small pieces of lime, which would cause cracks through expanding in conditions with high damp or frost.

The availability of a generator plant enables the use of energy to be minimalised, so the kilns and dryers are cleaner and more ecologically sound. In addition to working with natural gas, one of the cleanest energy sources known, the kilns are fitted with self-cleaning systems for the gases, to prevent them from being sent into the atmosphere. The kilns guarantee the same temperature in all areas, thus giving a product with totally even characteristics, regardless of the position of the tiles in the kiln. In the engobe line, we manage to imitate nature itself. With five cabins for liquid engobe and one for powder on each line, it is possible to achieve any type of ageing effect.
