How to Make the Most of Your Solar Energy Investment

Solar panels generate power from the sun which is converted to 240 volt AC power. The more intense sunlight that hits those panels, the more instant power that is available, and the longer that occurs the more of the basic units of power, or Kilowatt hours, (kwh) are produced. This power output is your solar investment which can then be used to reduce or eliminate your electricity bill or be sold back to your local energy provider via the Feed in Tariff system at a higher price then you paid to purchase it.

- Your location & environmental factors; Average sunlight hours per day received, its strength, your latitude etc.

- Correct site and aspect; Sites with large East/West horizons allow a longer window of sun-light to strike the modules on any given day. Correctly angled panels without shade allow for the highest average intensity of light to strike the panels and therefore a greater production of power. Each location must be individually analysed to design a system that will get the best results.

- Equipment used. There are many variables in components and system design which effect the maximum power output of say a 1.5KW system, for e.g a panel with a highly reflective surface would generally produce less than one with a non-reflective surface, using a tracking system to follow the sun can increase productivity by up to 48%, but introduces more cost and additional things to break down.

- The positioning of your System: Short lengths of heavy duty cabling lose less power than long lengths of cable, so positioning of equipment in a commercial environment will generally be more efficient than on a normal house.

- Maintenance performed: Any dust or mould left on a panel can easily reduce its efficiency.
