Airlite Windows & Doors come onboard to reduce heritage headaches for The Block All Stars

The Block All Stars contestants were thrown a massive curve ball when they were informed by Scott Cam that the homes they were about to renovate located on Tasman Street, Bondi had heritage overlay. This meant that the contestants had to adhere to strict guidelines set by the Heritage Architect, advising them of what they can and can't do during the renovation.

"Properties that are heritage listed are usually located in suburbs which have historical significance and to preserve the home's heritage status, the original appearance and design of the house must be considered right throughout a renovation," said Chris Barker, Director of Business Development, JELD-WEN Australia.

For The Block All Stars contestants there were several items in the homes that needed to be restored and preserved. This was not the case with regards to the windows in bedroom two, the bathroom and lounge room which the Heritage Architect deemed not restorable.

JELD-WEN's custom joinery business in NSW, Airlite Windows and Doors specialises in the manufacture of custom windows and doors for heritage homes and joined the team in this series to work with the Heritage Architect to manufacture and install new windows that adhered to heritage guidelines.

"Our installers removed one of the existing windows and took it to the factory where their experienced craftsmen pulled it apart to replicate the existing profile with custom heritage architrave was sourced to match from specialist timber merchant Fedwood Timber. The craftsmen then made new windows that were approved to the Heritage Architect's specifications," said Mr Barker.

In many cases the age of the house usually has a significant impact on the condition of windows, doors and other items in a heritage listed home. In this situation the heritage architect would instruct the homeowners to have items that exactly match replaced in the home.

"There is no doubt that these types of properties can be very challenging to renovate as the contestants on The Block All Stars had discovered. The vast amount of rules that govern a property with heritage overlay can be very overwhelming. These rules determine the type of renovations allowed to take place and what must be restored or conserved in a home. This is why it is crucial to consult with your local council and architect before you start any work," said Mr Barker.
