Quadric Commercial Interiors' Engineering Learning Centre for First Year students

Launched in June 2007, the First Year Engineering Learning Centre (FYLC) is situated in Hawken Engineering Building and is a multi-purpose space created to enhance the first-year experience of engineering students.

The Centre has a relaxed, contemporary design and is fitted with the latest in IT and media facilities to facilitate student interaction, learning and teamwork. This in turn promotes the establishment of student networks, and helps to smooth the sometimes difficult transition for students from high school to university.

Learning to work in partnership with others is a necessary skill for engineering students, as the engineering profession is collaborative and interdisciplinary. The design of the FYLC embraces and prepares students for this feature of professional practice.

Feedback has confirmed students enjoy having the FYLC as a place to call "home" while on campus, and that it is succeeding in providing opportunities for academic enhancement and the building of social networks.

The Centre is staffed by a full-time First Year Coordinator and has become a benchmark for other universities wishing to improve the first year student experience.
