Synthetic Sports Field with Underground Water Reservoir by TigerTurf

TIGERTURF AND IVANHOE GRAMMAR SCHOOL FIND A DAM GOOD WAY TO SAVE WATER.

As many schools, Ivanhoe Grammar, in Melbourne's north eastern suburbs, was experiencing problems with excessive wear on their natural grass ovals and lack of water.

During a lengthy consultation process, TigerTurf's design team developed a unique water harvesting solution for Ivanhoe. Due to site restrictions it was not possible to install above ground water storage system so TigerTurf's solution was to build a reservoir underneath the new synthetic sports facility.

Work commenced in October 2009 to excavate and remove off site in excess of 6600m3 of spoil. The excavated area was then lined and filled with ballast rock, that when compacted would allow the voids to provide a retention capacity of 1 megalitre. The water captured will be used to water the schools other natural ovals. In addition to the extensive earthworks, TigerTurf built a retaining wall and steps and prepared garden beds.

The completed installation, on top of the dam, will include two TigerTurf synthetic surfaces, Tournament 1000 and XT40 to provide multi-use areas for hockey, soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball, bat tennis, 4 square, softball and a eight lane 80m sprint lane. The surfaces will provide a safe, attractive play area, usable day in, day out without the need for water.

Works are schedule to complete at the end of February.
