Westech by Certainteed - University house made smarter with Energywise double glazed windows

Apprentices at Victoria University in suburban Melbourne, created a house that combines nineteenth century charm with the latest in energy and water conservation. Using only off-the-shelf materials and technology, they have set a standard the whole world can follow.

Learning on the job, the apprentices proved that ecologically sound housing can readily and economically be achieved by any home builder. The Smart House features water catchment, grey water recycling, solar hot water, energy efficient heating and cooling plus touch-screen control of all lighting and electrical systems. To ensure maximum insulation, and therefore minimal energy consumption for heating and cooling, new Energywise double-glazed windows were selected.

Energywise windows were recently introduced to Australia by Certainteed uPVC Windows. They are manufactured in high volume for low cost, bringing the long life and optimal thermal performance of uPVC frames within reach of the average buyer. From the unique range of four Energywise colours, the Smart House designers chose neutral beige. Other colours are grey, brown and forest green. Being part of the manufacturing process, the coloured frames will never need painting.

From busy Ballarat Road, the Smart House looks much like many of the traditional homes nearby. From inside, traffic races past in eerie silence, thanks to the acoustic control of the double glazed windows. The Smart House combines modern, open-space living with a conference room, offices and theatrette. Generous verandahs are positioned to capture winter sun and provide shade in summer.

"It need cost no more to build a sensible, comfortable, energy efficient house," says Energywise technical manager, Bill Taylor. "Now we can offer new economies of scale in ready-made uPVC framed double glazing, to increase home comfort and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And they are colourful as well as affordable. EnergyWise windows are also well accepted in commercial projects such as aged care facilities and villa units because they make 5 Star so easy to attain."
