After the heavy drought of the late 90's/early 00's many of Melbourne's fountains and water features were switched off, including the Mockridge Fountain. The John Mockridge fountain has been a key feature of City Square since it's development in late 90s. The fountain has prime position along Collins St near the intersection of Swanston in the heart of the city. Designed by Darryl Cowie DCG Design it is a simple yet visually engaging fountain, a thin veil of water stretching out across the face of a concrete wall, creating shimmering patterns as it spills across the grooved surface. As reported in The Age 05 May 2011 resurrecting Melbourne's desiccated fountains has been a passion for lord mayor Robert Doyle.
