Obviously waterproofing membrane failures are caused by a variety of reasons however recent projects have highlighted an interesting cause. I have been in the construction game for over 30 years, either as a registered building practitioner myself or the owner of F.E.W Waterproofing: http://au.linkedin.com/in/waterproofingfew

Having construction knowledge does give me an advantage when trying to work out the structural causes of water ingress. Construction methods are always changing and adapting.

I have recently noticed, either for reasons of design and/or cost considerations, subtle changes which have a direct impact on the success or otherwise of waterproofing membranes.

Many balcony floors are currently being constructed with minimal falls; particularly evidenced in multi-level apartments.

This has a significant effect on the choice of waterproofing product, the application of membranes and tile adhesives used.

Correct selection of waterproof membrane is imperative with structures designed with minimal falls.

The membrane must be capable of "ponding water" and the application must proceed with meticulous preparation to ensure detailing is installed correctly.

Unfortunately these issues are not always taken into consideration when contractors/specifiers/designers are considering waterproofing methodology with minimal fall.

F.E.W Waterproofing is an independent company; we choose the best product based on our knowledge, experience and the requirements of the individual waterproofing project.

Over the years we have become advocates of Liquid Rubber waterproof membrane. We have experienced great results where other products have failed. Liquid Rubber

provides a seamless environmentally safe and highly flexible membrane that will "hold" and "contain" water without breaking down - not all products are capable of this.

Liquid Rubber is our waterproof membrane of choice with minimal fall balconies, roof tops, retaining walls, below ground structures etc.

So if you have structures designed with minimal fall presently under construction and require immediate waterproofing or perhaps prior construction and at specification, consider some of the above issues.

Leaking structures are a builder's nightmare and
major cause of clients call back.

NB: Don't let the waterproof membrane be damaged by subsequent trades - a constant on-site problem.

NB: Water test the membrane BEFORE tiling - ensure the membrane is water tight.
