Sandstone Panel Mechanical Fixing System with StoneClip

mechanical sandstone panel fixing

600mm x 300mm x 40mm thick Sandstone
Panels being clad using 28 mm set size StoneClips

This is a project that is just about complete (September 2012). It is being built for Mr MICHAEL Cripps by Pickup Developments. The project itself has a central tower which is 15 mts high (liftshaft). The shaft itself is of poured concrete construction and is clad with 600mm x 300mm x 40mm thick Capricorn Sandstone panels that are being supported to the structure by the 28 mm set size Stoneclips, which are held in place by 1 only drive pin in each base plate of the clip.

Normally to clad a building of this nature you would use the 6 mm adjustable, which gives you a range of 5 mm - 25 mm cavity but the Stone Mason (Mr Stephen Rossini of Rossini Stone) and the developer got together with myself and decided to go with the 28 mm set size. In this case INSTEAD OF PUTTING THE KERF IN FROM THE FRONT FACE, they installed each panel in its right place and then cut the kerf in the panel to suit the position of plumb with the clip resting on the back substructure. This way is normally frowned upon as you don't get the sizing of the panels to suit but here they were very similar in thickness and the tower was nearly plumb and the stone would be supported at around 5 mm cavity.

The project can be viewed at 12 McDonald st, Cronulla 2230.
